From blogging to podcasting to creating videos, 4-H youth are leading the way, applying new media and communication tools to talk about breaking information, celebration coverage and educational data with their group. For instance, the 4-H News technology club in Jefferson County, Wash., gives on-the-spot studies through podcasts and movies submitted to their 4-H Network News Site. Club members have included a fire within an historic hotel and a Cross disaster training exercise and conducted interviews with local business leaders. The youth are hands-on in every step of putting together the one-to-two-minute news segments. We get ideas about what well do and who well interview, then we simply take the camera, record footage, use it the computers and edit it, 15-year-old Sophie Gilbert said. Gilbert first made a video of a school reunion but quickly saw the educational value on her group. Shes made portions about avoiding alcohol and drugs and a beach restoration project. There is really a need for us to talk about a number of the important things going on in our state and in the world, she said. The club got together as a relationship among the Washington State University Extension workplace, the local 4-H club and the local paper. Jack Olmsted, 4-H leader for the membership, Pamela Roberts, 4-H manager for the Jefferson County 4-H company, and the newspapers founder work closely with the youth. Online press could be a invaluable resource to fully capture not only the importance of the 4-H experience, also for our community, nation and the world, said Olmsted. The youth are receiving the process down and planning segments while making them pleasant but also informative. The 4-H journalists submit their stories to a global market using tools which can be readily available in homes and offices-a camcorder, computer linked to the Internet and telephone. It is vital to show the world that can be done and it is possible for one to do, said 13-year-old Daniel Bryant. Team people see themselves as a reference to others who wish to begin using online media. As they show adults how to develop and post news segments they also improve their public speaking skills and build self-esteem. 4-H is a group of young people across America who are learning control, citizenship and life skills..
