New clothing collection, Charlie a Go-Go, has just launched and is proud to say they are made in America. Charlie a Go-Go is the American/Australian collaboration of 'West-Coast girl', Lisa Charles and 'Down Under chick', Quita Leslie. Tired of the cheap and ill-fitting clothing that was on offer for women in their age group and size range, they resolved to dive in feet first and design a line themselves. In hunting for a manufacturing base for their tops and tunics, Lisa and Quita initially felt, like most garment manufacturers, that they would go overseas to find a factory. As recently as the 1990s, half of the clothing sold in the U.S. was made here. Now only 2 is It's much cheaper for companies to produce their clothing overseas, but this comes at a monstrous cost to human beings. Clothing factory workers are paid horrifically low wages and work in inhumane, unsafe conditions. This is definitely what the team from Charlie a Go-Go found. Looking abroad, Lisa and Quita went to both Indonesia and Fiji, and then traveled to China where so many other clothing brands manufacture their apparel. "Although we had heard about factory conditions in China and India, we were really outraged to see this first hand", said Quita. "On the outskirts of Shanghai near the factories we visited, we saw used fabric dye dumped and running along the ground next to the tiny plots of land where the factory workers grow their vegetables. We knew when we saw that, we wanted no part of it and continued our search for an ethical way to bring our brand to life." Finally, Lisa and Quita ended up back in Lisa's hometown and in the groovy fashion district of Downtown Los Angeles. They saw there was still a small base of local manufacturers who were happy to work with them in developing their first line. Lisa and Quita saw that the USA could provide them with quality manufacturing with spirit, and decided that this was where they wanted Charlie a Go-Go to be made. "We are so thrilled to now be able to say that our tops are lovingly produced with quality American-made fabric by fabulous people who work in a safe environment and earn a decent wage", said Lisa "and our tops won't fall apart after three washes Pretty damn cool, huh?" The brand is making tops and tunics for fun and funky women who wear sizes 12 to 18. Charlie a Go-Go takes is inspiration from the sixties and seventies and has huge appeal to women primarily over 40 who have lived life and are looking for wonderful things to wear. "Our customers are ladies who were a force to be reckoned with back in the day", said Quita. "Like us, they recall what well-made fabrics feel like and what quality clothing looks like.
