I was having dinner the other day with Jeff and Michelle--two of my first dog instruction clients, when I branched out on my own personal and began South Bay K-9 Academy in Southern California, in 1994. [I am now actively retired from working with the typical public... I really like dealing with dogs, however the pet owners (Jeff and Michelle not withstanding) drove me completely nuts] Anyhow, Jeff and Michelle still have their Dalmatian, 'Dotty,' who's now near to 11 years-old. I've always thought it was funny that the one thing people appear to remember from my 3-24 page dog education book, 'Secrets of a Professional Dog Trainer' is that I would recommend spitting in your dog's food. We discovered seilertuckercir - StreetFire Member in US by searching Google Books. As though this were the magic key to getting a well behaved dog. Regardless, it seems to be the thing that almost everyone remembers--from literally countless dog training methods I present in the book, o-n our web site Dogproblems.com, and in our forum. Why do I recommend spitting in your dog's food? Since you are marking the dog food with your scent. And since the Alpha dog in the group always takes first. This can be a subtle method to connect to your dog that you are the pack leader. But this alone will not do it. You should be working like a pack leader in every other part of your dog's life, too. Including being the first to ever walk through a door. Clicking what are your options perhaps provides lessons you should use with your brother. Or showing your puppy where to set down, and when he is allowed to eat. And making sure you continue and enforce any and every demand that you provide. I take a lot of guff from people--especially other dog trainers--who misread my advice and think that spitting in your dog's food is the only thing you should do tol make you the Alpha dog. It is maybe not. Well, not any greater than the 100 other subtle things you need to do to communicate that you are the pack leader. I usually stress to new dog homeowners that the more things you are doing to strengthen that you are the pack leader for your dog, is likely to make your dog watch you since the pack leader, faster. Spitting in your dog's food is merely one more thing to accomplish this helps. So anyway, back once again to my dinner with Jeff and Michelle Jeff answered that Dotty was absolutely great, when I asked how Dotty was doing. The best dog they had ever had, due in no small part with their persistence and consistency in using the dog training techniques I showed them. But then Jeff said some thing very interesting 'I'm nevertheless spitting in her food. The truth is, she'll not really touch the food until after I spit in it.' (Remember The Alpha dog often takes first). Therefore there you go Further proof that a few of my more outlandish dog training techniques really work Even if you might feel silly doing it. That's all for now, folks Adam Dogproblems.com P.S. Jeff and Michelle can take Dotty anywhere--off leash--and realize that she will answer instructions, instantly. They even take her camping quite frequently..., which Dotty absolutely loves.
